What Goes On (or Doesn’t) in the Far North Nabe of Gracy Woods?

Val, an employee at the Bevos Bookstore across from Austin Community College, has been living in Gracy woods for several years. She tells us about life in her slightly ho-hum nabe where theres plenty of room for development and change.

Can you describe the neighborhood for me?

There is not a lot going on besides the school (Austin Community College north campus) and this shopping center. I think it’s about 80% apartment complexes and lots of duplexes. There’s not much to do, it isn’t downtown.

Is this your ideal neighborhood to live in? Why or why not?

Not really, I would rather live in South Congress or downtown. There isn’t a lot of transportation here. It take one and a half to two hours to get downtown by bus from up here. It takes a long time.

Are there any misconceptions people have about Gracy Woods?

I don’t know. I don’t think most people even know about this place.

Were you surprised by anything when you moved here?

The computer store next door was broken into twice and so was our store, but the robbers didn’t steal anything. The convenience store was also broken into.

So is there a lot of crime here?

No, there isn’t, it just seems to be in this shopping center. I’ve never heard of anyone being jumped or anything like that.

What is your favorite thing about this neighborhood?

I like the java café (which is in the same shopping complex).

NICK, Coworker: There’s also a pretty nice creek (Walnut Creek) just up Metric where I can walk my dog and play with him, that’s nice. Not a whole lot other than that.

What do you wish you could change about this neighborhood?

I would want better transportation and more restaurants. If you don’t take the car, there isn’t much (restaurant options). Just the horrible cafeteria food from the college.

How is the Hospital (St. David’s North Austin Medical Center)?

I have not been there, luckily, but a friend of mine had a baby there recently and she said it was excellent.

Do you have any advice for someone moving to the area?

Don’t open a business here. This is a campus bookstore right by the campus so it works. But it would be very tough to run a business. There are no restaurants here, not even fast food.

Anything else you would like to say about the neighborhood?

I just think it (Gracy Woods) needs more to do. Double Dave’s Pizzeria is a different story though. The food is good and it’s a great place for watching sports. It gets packed in there and everyone gets excited.
